By Dirk Müller-Maguhn (English teacher)

Our English book is so boring. Can we watch a film? Can we read Harry Potter? Or can we read another book?

xl_english_lessonPupils from 10b and 10e are currently reading English bestsellers. (*)

When you are an English teacher you are confronted with questions like these every day. Especially in higher English classes. So, what is there to do?

„Having problems with a pregnant girlfriend“

I searched the internet for books for teenagers, found some and decided to read them in class. Just in case you want to try for yourself, here are the titles:

  • Be More Chill – A pill-size supercomputer helps a 15 year old looser to be cool.
  • Slam – A 16 year old skater (skateboarder) has problems with having a pregnant girlfriend… (by Nick Hornby – you might know the film About a Boy with Hugh Grant)
  • The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Nighttime – A 15 year old autistic teenager tries to solve a murder.
  • Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment – Genetic engineered teenagers escape their lab… (the film will be in the movies this year)
  • Killing Mr. Griffin – A group of highschool teenagers accidently kill their English teacher… (written by the author who also wrote ”I know what you did last summer“)

If you want more information: Contact the pupils from 10b or 10e.
Oh, by the way: The pupils not only read the books and have a good time, they have to write a „reading journal“ as well (school, remember?).
